In the video world, colorists or video editors that do any kind of color correction are expected to use a calibrated video monitor.
The viewing environment is also expected to be optimized and tightly controlled. This is all because the idea of color consistency is intuitive and universally accepted.
Why don’t we video people hold the same standard for sound?
The principle is the same: we need to understand the deficiencies in our listening environment and make adjustments for these when creating our mix.
Sound is, as they say, half the picture.
While Windows and Mac OS X have built-in room correction features, they lack the expansive features that a dedicated hardware / software solution can provide.
You may already be familiar with the ubiquitous line of Rokit monitors by KRK. They also have a room correction device, called ERGO, that promises to make our mixes “room perfect.”
